Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta has recorded another great feat on Tuesday 26th November 2019 as it performed a successful surgery on impalement, the very first of its kind.
A patient was rushed in with a log of wood about 1.5m length and 10cm wide which penetrated through the upper part of his left chest through to the back.
According to the report gathered, the patient a truck driver by occupation said he was sitting in front of a truck with the driver travelling along Itori, Lagos-Abeokuta road. He explained further that their driver swerved off the road while avoiding another oncoming truck and they ran into a roadside shop made of wood.
Speaking to the head of the medical team that performed the surgery, Dr. Saheed Babatunde Sanni – a cardiothoracic Surgeon, said the patient has been taken to two different private hospitals before he was referred to Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta for expert management.
At the presentation of the patient at the accident and emergency unit of FMCA, Dr. Sanni said the patient was immediately resuscitated, IV access secured, placed on intra nasal oxygen, blood taken for investigation and was planned for immediate surgery by the CTSU team. The surgery which lasted for about 2 hours was very successful with the patient fully recovered and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for monitoring.
Speaking with the patient a day after the surgery, he said he was full of thanks to God Almighty for sparing his life adding that he is very grateful to all the medical team at Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta for their swift response since his arrival till the time of filing this report. Speaking earlier with one of the nurses at the accident and emergency unit of Federal Medical Centre, Mrs. Ayodeji-Zed A.A confirmed the incident and shed more light on what transpired when the patient came in.
Also, in her words, the manager in charge of .theatre unit of Federal Medical Centre, Mrs. Abosede Fagoyinbo expressed her gratitude to the entire management team led by the Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa Olomu for providing an enabling environment for all staff which helps in bringing out the best output from all quarters across the centre.
Giving her own report about the incident,the consultant in charge of Anaesthesia department, Dr. Mrs. A. A Odewabi narrated the challenge they encountered when they received the patient. He was to be anaesthetized by the team of Anaesthetist on call led by Dr Adedapo (a consultant Anaesthetist). He was the one that called for more hands and involved other consultants including herself, residents, and nurses in the department and they all rallied round to help. The challenge was how to position the patient with the wood piercing his chest and sticking out of his back! He was put to sleep in the sitting position before being made to lie at the edge of the bed. She acknowledged the help of others clinical team who helped in lifting and positioning the patient. In her own words, “this is the first time such a procedure was done in Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta.” She was full of gratitude to Almighty God for the successful procedure and also thank the management team of Federal Medical Center at large.
The Medical Director of the Centre, Prof. Adewale Musa Olomu on his part has shown his appreciation to the cardiothoracic unit for embarking on what he described as “complex case of impalement”. He further congratulated all the medical personnel involved in the management of the case and prayed for God’s blessings on them all.
