The Department of Medicine is a foundation department in the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta that emphasizes evidence-based patient care of the highest available standard with passionate dedication and excellent interpersonal relationships. A flagship department of the hospital with a burgeoning residency training programme, the department combines clinical excellence with an active research base. Our diagnostic and therapeutic clinical services are growing and making an impact. The very first trans-oesophageal echocardiography in Nigeria was performed in our department a few years back. The department is building, training and engaged in research collaborations with several other hospitals and institutions within and outside Nigeria (NPH, Aro; UCH, Ibadan; LUTH, Lagos) as well as with institutions outside Nigeria (the UK, USA, India and South Africa).
The pioneer consultant and head of the department since 1993 were Dr J. K. L. Osinfade, a former commissioner for health in Ogun State who retired from the services of the Centre in 2011. He was followed by Dr R. F. Ogundipe between 1999 and 2007, under whose leadership the effort to commence residency training in Internal Medicine was initiated and a partial accreditation was actually secured from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) in 2007. She retired in 2018. She was followed by Dr O.S. Ogah (2007 -2009), another former commissioner, under whose leadership we secured partial accreditation of the West Africa College of Physicians (WACP) in March 2008. He also achieved the feat of performing the first trans-oesophageal echocardiography in Nigeria. He set the pace in our Residency training. Dr R. O Akinyemi took over the mantle of leadership between 2009 and 2012, enhanced the Institution’s international collaboration, and brought home the Nigeria Doctors working in Great Britain for human capital development and capacity building. He had left us for UCH. Dr O.F Adesina was in charge between 2013 and 2015. He steered the affairs of the department and also expanded the number of units. He is one of the principal partners in the SIDCAIN project. He is an examiner at the National Postgraduate College since 2015. Dr A.M. Hamzat took over the leadership of the department between 2016 and 2018. He further expanded the units in the department and worked with the management to increase the number of residents. He is an examiner in the National Postgraduate Medical College and an Amir of the Muslim community in the hospital. Dr O.T Olunuga was at the helm of affairs of the department between 2019 and 2021 and brought further expansion to the department together with the management, the department had an increased number of Residents, Consultants and Scientific Officers to mention but a few. She is the former treasurer and South-West Coordinator of the Nigerian Cardiac Society and an examiner in the National Postgraduate Medical College.
