....our Journey so far....

…..Precisely 30 years ago, Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta was established on the 21st April, 1993. The purpose of establishing this institution among others, is to give quality health services, Training and Research.

Looking back in the last 30 years, we have done quite a lot in terms of Training.

This Celebration is loaded with lots of activities that will bring everyone together…..

SECOND LECTURE ON CERVICAL CANCER: A PREVENTABLE DEADLY DISEASE AND BREAST CANCER: NOT A DEATH SENTENCE

Cervical and breast cancer are two deadly diseases ravaging human especially the women folks. These diseases which also poise as silent killers are often time not given the adequate attention needed hence the need for sensitisation as well as community outreach to the urban areas and the grassroots on measures needed to combat these diseases.

The man at the elms of affair at Federal medical centre, Abeokuta, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu made the above known at the programme for the unveiling of the centre’s 30th anniversary commemorative logo and guest lectures on Wednesday 15th February, 2023 at the Telemedicine hall, federal medical centre, Abeokuta.

During his opening remark, the Medical Director, Prof Musa-Olomu appreciated God who made it possible to gather and witness the centre’s 30th anniversary while noting that the phenomenal change that has transformed the centre is what is being celebrated.

He further said that the purpose of establishing the hospital 30 years ago was to deliver quality health services, for training qualified health workers, for caring out qualitative and quantitative research work.

Prof Kayode Ajenifuja, a professor of obstetrics and Gynaecology, obafemi awolowo University teaching hospital complex, ile-ife Osun state and Dr Lawal Abdulrazzaq, consultant General Surgeon Lagos state teaching hospital, lagos said that the cause of cancer is unknown and further said that it is an uncontrolled growth of cells in the body.

Dr Ajenifuja while presenting his papers on the topic Cervical Cancer: A preventable deadly disease emphasises that the disease does not show any symptoms until it has progressed to the cancer stage, a process which takes years before manifesting.

Some of the dignitaries at the ceremony are His royal majesty, Oba (Dr) Saburee Babajide Bakre, Agura of Gbagura, Abeokuta, Alhaja Adebisi Edionsere, Dr Tomi coker, Ogun State commissioner of health represented by the Ministry’s Permenent Secretary Dr… DR Mrs Titilayo Musa-Olomu, Wife of the hospital Medical Director, Dr Rafiu Adekola Soyele, Provost Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta.

Also present at the ceremony are the Hospital Management Committe including Head of Clinical Services Dr A.S Adediran, the Director of Administration Mr A.O Vaughn, head of Nursing Service Mrs R.A Ashimi among others.

As Federal medical Centre, Abeokuta celebrates her 30th anniversary, it is pertinent to remind the hospital community and stakeholders on the need to  brace up for the challenges being posed by life shortening diseases ravaging the society. 
 
To this end, the hospital has organised  her first in the series of 30th anniversary commemorative lectures with the  first lecture on  *Prostrate Cancer: the Horror of Aging* presented by Prof T.A Badmus, a consultant urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife .
 
The second lecture, *Kidney Failure: an Emerging Epidemic with Catastrophic Outcomes* was presented by  Consultant Physician/Nephrologist, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital complex, Ile-Ife.

In  his welcome address at the event held at the Muhammadu Buhari Conference Centre and Telemedicine building in the hospital premises on Thursday Jan 26th,2023,the Medical Director, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu Musa appreciated 
 God as well as members of staff for the transformation experienced in the Centre while hoping for a better development by the time the University of Medicine and Medical Sciences come on board.
Prof Arogundade revealed that acute kidney infection is very common with prevalent aetiology factor.
 
 He also stated that the outcome or survival is largely dependent on aetiology, severity, duration of illness and institution of renal replacement therapy, while suggesting that the treatment of acute kidney infection should be made free by the government. 
 
While rounding up his lecture, Prof Arogundade stated that chronic kidney disease has become a priority global public health issue, with a large number of patients not seeking medical care and then progress to End Stage Renal Disease. 
 
Some of the dignitaries in attendance at the lecture are the Olowu of Owu kingdom Oba Prof Saka Adelola Matemilola represented by his wife, Olorin Aminat Matemilola, Ogun State Commissioner for  Health, Dr Tomi Coker, The head of Service Dr Nofiu Aigoro as well as members of the Hospital Management Committee.
 
They include the Head of Clinical Services Dr A.S Adediran, the Director of Administration Mr A.O  Vaughan, Head of Nursing Service Mrs R.A Ashimi among others.

 

Prof  Musa-Olomu who declared his unwavering commitment to the overall development of the revealed that the intention of bringing up the topics of discussion is to ensure that diseases posing as silent killers are exposed and brought to the  attention of the general publics.  .
 
Prof Tajudeen Badmus while delivering his lecture on Prostrate Cancer: the Horror of Aging,  described the ailment as one  prevalent among black male who are above the age of fifty.
 
 He further listed the causes of prostrate cancer to range from hormonal factors, racial factors, occupation, diet among others.
 
He further urged the general public to  watch out for symptoms such as urgency to urinate and difficulty in passing urine 
 
Prof Badmus went on to admonish the hospital management to strengthen its capacity in terms of manpower and facility, strengthen supportive department as well as community outreach.
 
Prof Fatiu Abiola Arogundade who delivered a lecture on *Kidney Failure: an* *Emerging Epidemic with Catastrophic Outcomes* said adoption of healthty living and  community based awareness programme/screening among others are ways to combat rising cases of kidney failure.
