BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Ophthalmology unit was created on 1st February 1999 and has one medical officer and a visiting consultant. It rose to become a full department February 2000 with a full time consultant and a medical officer, two corper doctors and an optometrist. The number of consultant rose gradually to two in 2008 and three in 2011 and present we have 6 consultants in the department.

The department is subdivided into units’ namely ophthalmic unit comprising of:-

  • Ophthalmologist, resident doctors and medical officers who consults and treat
    patients in eye and perform surgical operation.
  • Ophthalmic nurses – who arranges patients for the eye clinic and ensure
    smooth patients flow in and out of the unit as well as in patients (on wards
    space admission)
  • Optometry units and dispensing unit: comprising of optometrists in refraction
    and low vision sections optical dispensing section and optical laboratory section where lenses and frames are fixed.

All these units work together under the co-coordinator of ophthalmologist to ensure quality eye care delivery to our teeming clients.
