Paediatrics

The Department of Paediatrics started with the inception of the hospital as one of the clinical departments. The Department emphasises evidence-based patient care with passionate dedication and excellent interpersonal relationship between professionals and parents. Our diagnostic and therapeutic clinical services are growing and making impact. The department is building training and research collaboration with several hospitals and institutions within Nigeria.

The Department at inception was headed by Dr (Mrs) Akindele, a Consultant Paediatrician originally from UCH, Ibadan and in 1995 by Dr Adedoyin (now a Professor of Paediatric Nephrology at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin). Dr (Mrs) Ayebo Sadoh became the Head of Department in 1998 (now at University of Benin Teaching Hospital). She was succeeded by Dr. A.S Adediran in 2005. He had the vision for commencement of residency training and brought the vision to fruition.

The Department recorded giant strides in the tenure of Dr1.O.F Dedeke and her successor Dr. M.M Ogundeyi in terms of expansion of services, manpower and training of residents. This was sustained by Dr C.C Uzodimma who handed over in March, 2022 to the current head of the department, Dr. D.D. Agbo.

The residency training started with a partial accreditation in 2007 and 2013 from the West African College of Physicians (Faculty of Paediatrics) and National Post graduate Medical College of Nigeria (Faculty of Paediatrics) respectively. The first set of residents were employed in August 2007. The Department has successfully navigated three re-accreditations till date from the West Africa College of Physicians and National Post-graduate Medical College of Nigeria respectively.

Since October, 2012 when one of the first set of residents became a member of the West Africa College of Physician, we have recorded several memberships of both colleges over the years, the latest set of members were achieved in April, 2022. Since inception of the residency, the department has produced a total of (12) fellows/consultants, nine (9) from the West Africa College of Physicians and three (3) from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria as at April, 2022.

There are presently fourteen (14) full time consultants, sixteen (16) residents in the department. We also attract accomplished Paediatricians on sabbatical or on contract basis. The Department runs a vibrant out-patient unit and operates 7 subspecialties and these include:
